If you have a projector, you probably want it mounted out of the way. Placed up on the ceiling, it’s less likely that someone will walk in front of your projector while watching a movie. For years now I’ve been using an OmniMount PJT40 for my projectors and it has worked perfectly. To test two projectors at once, I needed to install another projector mount so I again looked to OmniMount. The OmniMount 3N1-PJT projector mount is able to hold up to 40 pounds, just like the PJT40, but is more affordable at only $55. For those that won’t be routinely swapping out their projector, the 3N1-PJT does a very good job.

With the ceiling section installed, there is a second piece of hardware that attaches to the projector. A variety of screws in different metric sizes are provided, which should work for almost any projector out there. With the BenQ HT2050, I simply screwed three of them in (as there are only three mount points and not four). The adjustable arms on the mounting plate make it easy to adapt the 3N1-PJT to almost any projector. It adapted to both the BenQ HT2050 and to the Epson 5020UBe with no problems at all despite being very different in size.
Attaching the projector to the ceiling portion of the mount is easy. You insert and twist the plate into position, and lock it in place with a single screw. The design makes it easy to attach it solo without worrying that is may fall. Once mounted you can easily adjust the projector in all directions before tightening the mount to align it with the screen. I found that using the adjustments on the projector arms after it is locked into place for the final tweaks made this easiest to get it lined up.
Overall I had the 3N1-PJT installed with the BenQ HT2050 in under 90 minutes from opening the box. I’m not even a great handyman, but this was certainly up to my level of skills. Making the install totally invisible can be done by running cables in the ceiling or inside a cable channel that is painted to match. Getting the projector from a shelf or a coffee table onto the ceiling and made totally invisible is a simple afternoon activity.
Compared to the PJT40
The only other projector mount I’ve used extensively is the OmniMount PJT40. It is, believe it or not, even easier to install than the 3N1-PJT. The mounting and leveling system is simpler, and making fine adjustments is a breeze. However it costs more than twice as much, and is 2-3” taller. For some rooms, this extra height will drop a projector too far from the ceiling to work.
If I only had to install a projector once, and was fine with it taking a while longer to get it right, the 3N1-PJT will have final results as good as the PJT40 does. If I planned to replace my projector at some point, or wanted the setup to be much easier, than I might look into the PJT40. It is easier to setup and install, and much easier to swap between projectors.
The main drawbacks with the 3N1-PJT are the same ones I have with the PJT40. The first is that the legs are too short to mount a JVC projector. The JVC X550R arrived for testing and it is too large to mount on either of the OmniMount ceiling mounts. If you own a JVC projector, or are considering one, then you should look at other mounts designed just for it instead.
The 40 pound weight limit is also light for some of the projectors on the market. The Epson LS10000 comes right up to that limit and I would want a heavier duty mount for it. Most projectors are not going to be an issue, but a few are past what is safe for the 3N1-PJT.
I’d like to see a way to add a horizontal shift to the mount. As you’re limited to mounting on a stud, you only have so much control on where you place a projector mount. If you move from a center mounted lens, as the Epson 5020 has, to one on one side like the BenQ HT2050, the projector might no longer match up with the screen. If your screen was permanently installed, such as a drop down model, this might mean you can’t align the image correctly. On a projector with lens shift you can fix this, but having a way to do it without lens shift would help.
I also would like an easier way to tighten the adjustments lock. No matter how much I tried to be steady while tightening it, the projector would always shift. I can fix this with the arm adjustments, but it just isn’t quite as easy as the PJT40 to be perfect with.
OmniMount 3N1-PJT Conclusions
Projector mounts are basic things. They need to hold a projector, make it easy to get it aligned with the screen, and simple enough that you can do it solo. The OmniMount 3N1-PJT fits all these and lets you get your projector on the ceiling for $55. Unless your projector is too large or too heavy for the OmniMount to work, it is an easy and effective way to get the job done.
